Prof. Gökhan S. Hotamışlıgil, a member of TÜSEB’s International Scientific Advisory Board, established to integrate the expertise and international experience of distinguished Turkish scientists working abroad into the strategic objectives of the Health Institutes of Türkiye (TÜSEB), has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the United States and a globally recognized symbol of academic excellence.

According to the list of newly elected members announced by the NAS on 28 April 2026, Prof. Hotamışlıgil received this distinguished recognition for his pioneering contributions to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic diseases.

Prof. Hotamışlıgil serves as the James Stevens Simmons Professor of Genetics and Metabolism at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He also conducts research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and the Joslin Diabetes Center.

As a leading scientist in the field of immunometabolism, Prof. Hotamışlıgil has played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the interactions between the immune system and metabolic processes. His research has demonstrated the critical contribution of these interactions to the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disorders, significantly shaping the field over the past decades.

The fundamental research carried out in the laboratory established by Prof. Hotamışlıgil at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has generated important scientific insights into cellular stress pathways, lipid hormones, FABP4 and FABKIN biology, and organelle functions. These studies have contributed substantially to elucidating the mechanisms of metabolic diseases and to the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.
